Have you ever been called for Jury Duty? before or after registering to vote?
by EndofMysteries ini've never been called for jury duty and i'm not yet registered to vote, although i'm hoping to get that done this month.
i know someone who within a few months of registering to vote was called for jury duty.
i've read some articles that said voter records 'used' to be used to call on people but that was a thing of the past.

I got called sometime back in the early 1990's when I lived in TN and had never registered to vote. That was before the "new light" came out that serving as a juror was a "conscience matter," but I served anyway. I guess I was "running ahead of Jehovah's chariot." Ha ha.
Now I live in NH and am most definitely registered to vote, but have not been called for jury duty yet. I will serve when called if at all possible. I think it is a privilege and a civic duty.

Ferguson Shooting (Is my thinking on this all wrong.......)
by out4good3 ini think everyone here can agree that walking down the street, even in the middle of the street, is not cause for having a clip emptied in your ass......... i can understand how the black community would be outraged by the injustice of seeing another black man dead in the street at the hands of the police under mysterious circumstances....... i hope that i'm not succumbing to the attempts to assinate the already well impuned character of the dead man...... however.
i can't help but think that this could all have been avoided by exercising the proper discretion with fore-knowledge of the disadvantages people of color have when they are dealing with law enforcement in the united states.
it is not as if this disadvantage has only since recently came to light.

Here's what we KNOW as facts:
* Michael Brown was a thug, a bully, and a thief. The video of him in the store shortly before the shooting is proof enough of his mood and actions that day.
* Officer Darren Wilson has NO history of racism or excessive violence. He was visibly distraught immediately after the shooting, as seen in the videos.
Commentary:
The public has every right to demand that the shooting be thoroughly investigated, but has NO right to demand any particular outcome, much less a specific verdict. To indict the officer, much less actually try him, just to appease the crowds is just plain wrong. Justice should take its course just as if there were no public outcry. This is not a country of mob rule (yet). I say let the chips fall where they may, but don't preordain the outcome.
Personally, I find the officer's account of how an insolent young thug hit him and tried to get his gun and then charged at him much more believable than a cop simply deciding to execute an innocent pedestrian just for fun. The story of Brown kneeling in the street with his hands up yelling "Don't shoot" smells like pure bullcrap.
Shields are up. Flame away. Nobody ever accused me of being politically correct.

I now have a law degree!
by digderidoo inhi guys, i don't really post on here much anymore, having been on here since 2001. this site helped me out in the early days and has been a great support system for all of my past jw issues.
like many others i was discouraged from an education so that i could window clean and pioneer in my youth during the 80's.
having spent many years post my jw exit in alcoholism and periods of drugs, i decided to clean myself up 7 years ago by attending aa, i was still a window cleaner ... at the time i wrote extensively on here about my issues.

Congratulations!!! I've have long thought about going to law school. Alas, life got in the way. I went into aviation instead and wound up a 777 captain flying all over Asia and Europe from the US. It's a great life, but I always wonder what if...
Again, congratulations. I know how much hard work you must have put into it. I'm sure I don't have that many brain cells to spare anymore.

Poll--How Many Believe In God, Do Not Believe or Are Not Sure Of His Existence?
by minimus ini believe in god but i'm not sure of anything....what about you?.

I am convinced that there is no "God" as described by any religion, past or present. Any "God" that acted as described in the Bible is not worthy of respect, much less worship. He exhibits all the worst characteristics of humanity. He is a petty, egotistical, vengeful, schizophrenic, genocidal, misogynistic, religious and racial bigot.
I fully realize that I do not have all the answers, or any answers at all, regarding the origin of the universe, life, conciousness, or really anything. But that doesn't mean the "answer" has to be some supernatural sky daddy.
I think we just have to do the best we can with the time we have. That rules out trying to force others to conform to our particular brand of superstition. The human race should have outgrown such foolishess long ago. Maybe someday...

Why did John Walsh, "The Hunt" Pedophile Brother Mclean Show a Birthday Cake?
by BucketShopBill inwho caught the photo of the eight year-old birthday cake photo?
the show was better than no publicity, i think any type of news informing the public there is a problem that exists with pedophiles in setting we assume are safe is good.
what's up with the birthday cake, what did you think?

Yeah, I also noticed a couple of scenes where they showed a regular (probably King James Version) bible instead of the New World Translation that JW's use almost exclusively. Little details like that detract from an otherwise excellent piece.

Australian brother and sister country band
by under the radar ina while back, there were some interesting posts about an award-winning australian brother and sister country music band.
they had a music video out which showed "hot button" words from the watchtower as if cut out and pasted on a wall for a backdrop.
does anyone know the name of this band and/or the title of the song i'm thinking of?

Thanks everybody, especially jwleaks. I was out most of the day, but downloaded their album Outa Here as soon as I checked this thread.
Whether you like country music or not, you have to admit they're very talented. I wish them all the success in the world.

JW's just called at my door, simply handed me the JW.ORG tract and left! JW's now mere leaflet distributors.
by yadda yadda 2 ini'm off work today and its a monday morning.
a male and female jw just knocked on my door, i opened it, the guy just handed me their latest website promoting tract saying "hi, were just leaving these with people today", and then he made to leave.
i looked at the tract and then looked at him as he was turning to walk away and said to him "ok, thanks, but ummm you could've just left it in my letterbox.".

Well, in the US it is illegal to put anything in anyone's mailbox without the proper postage, so JWs aren't supposed to do that. They've also gotten flack before for putting tracts and such in people's doors because it could let potential burglars know that no one's home. So about the only thing left is to knock on doors and hand the religious junk mail directly to whoever comes to the door.
The average JW today is simply not able to carry on an intelligent conversation about the Bible or even defend their own beliefs. I would bet that most are not up on what they are supposed to believe now anyway, and certainly not the "reasoning" behind all the changes. They are trained to run at the first sign that someone knowledgeable about the Bible might want to engage in an actual conversation and not simply listen to a rote "presentation."
A dog with a note in his mouth could pioneer now and do just as much "good."
